THE CHALLENGE

Taking calculated risks with a talented offshore team

The team behind leading stakeholder engagement firm Queenswood Engagement found themselves frustrated with the archaic processes that typify the construction industry. They understood that businesses interested in using tech-driven solutions had huge opportunities to grow and wanted to launch a product that utilised automation and digital tools to enhance their offering and stand out from the competition.

With limited experience in tech and development, the team required external support. However, due to the talent shortage and high costs associated with materialising a disruptive yet unknown idea in the UK, they knew they needed to build their team elsewhere.

After several conversations with the WeAssemble team, Queenswood felt it had found a partner that empowered it to move ahead with its vision.

The solution

Queenswood Engagement reached out to WeAssemble’s founders after being referred by a mutual connection. After meeting with the Queenswood team, it was clear that time was of the essence. Their product team was looking to develop and launch a groundbreaking digital product imminently but did not have the dedicated resource to do so. Nor did they have the time to wait for an in-house development team to be recruited through traditional means.

Using our Filtered Talent process, we assembled a top-to-bottom technical development team that was made up of front-end engineers, back-end engineers, a product manager, a project manager, QAs, DevOps specialists and UX designers. All new hires were experts in their field who could quickly get to work alongside Queenswood’s 3D designer and product manager to bring their ideas to life.

Custom client portals and map customisation
Integration with Google Maps API

A custom interactive layer allows users to mark and customise Google Maps data to represent construction activities and aid planning and consultation. This supports the partner’s priorities of accuracy and innovation.

Interactive and animated timeline

Users can visually plan and map activity over time using real geo data. They can export video content from the timeline that shows how construction projects will advance over time.

Custom client portals and map customisation

As this tool is used in critical meetings with stakeholders to mitigate risk in the planning of high-stake construction projects, client customisation adds a personal and professional touch.

Remote has never been so close

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, remote work was reserved for a select few, including tech teams. However, since 2020, everyone can work remotely — even those working in construction. The Queenswood Engagement team may have previously hesitated to work with a 100% remote development team, but this cultural shift brought about many technological advancements. Slack channels, video calls and more enabled Queenswood Engagement to lead their team their way.

Flexibility and scalability

In any business exercise, there is an element of risk; we challenged the risks associated with offshoring by offering Queenswood the opportunity to work flexibly with its team, including the option to flex its team with 30 days’ notice. For example, they could scale their team up and down with each new sprint as the product grew, reducing their concerns around balancing investment with the value received.

RECRUITMENT & SET UP

Enhanced collaboration & communication

While the recruitment process was ongoing, we acquired top-quality technology and equipment. We then set up Queenswood’s new team in a space dedicated to this partner, providing their developers with an opportunity to work collaboratively.

The Queenswood team were initially concerned about UK-India communication due to language barriers, time zone differences and the distance brought about by working remotely. As in many traditional industries, they needed to overhaul their approach to work.

However, with regular opportunities for feedback and the support of a talented account management team, we eased our partner’s concerns. Working with a team within an industry that leans towards traditional approaches allowed us to stress-test our approach.

Before partnering with WeAssemble, we’d never have been able to build such a large team so fast because of the restrictions of onshore hiring and our lack of experience in tech. They’re experts at building teams and recommended an offshore setup, an approach which has changed everything for us.
